Olive reigns supreme at Tewksbury trattoria

TEWKSBURY -- Enjoy fresh Mediterranean-Italian dishes as you gaze at the hills of Tuscany and archways of the Middle East. You don't have to travel far for this one. The Black Olive of Tewksbury's Mediterranean ambiance -- hand-painted murals , burgundy fabrics and sultry music -- gives you the escape to paradise.

Opening two years ago on Main Street, this eatery quickly became famous for its Black Olive Special -- artichokes, sun-dried tomatoes, garlic, spinach, and mushrooms in a spicy marinara sauce over pasta. "People come here to enjoy themselves and not be rushed," said owner Kal Nasser of Wakefield.  Recently, this hot spot has become the buzz of town thanks to live entertainment and monthly specials.

Tuesday & Wednesday enjoy dinner for two (up to $12 each) and a bottle of wine for only $30. On Sundays in August, take 50 percent off any bottle of wine or just grab a free popsicle. Early bird special and discount coupons are available on their Web site, www.Black-Olive.com.

Try a homemade chicken or veal parmesan baked with fresh marinara sauce, mozzarella and parmesan cheese served over pasta. "What sets us apart is that our food is made to order. No microwaves, no prepared-in-advance meals. Everything is fresh," said Nasser.

You'll have plenty to choose from with their wide variety of pasta, chicken, seafood, steak, veal and salads. A full bar offers up some of the best martinis around.

"Our food is good and affordable. The restaurant is classy, but not snobby," said waitress Karrie Lovas, 20 of Lowell.

Thursday nights feature live entertainment from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. with the Dean Martin Tribute Show performed by Dave Barbuto. Friday and Saturday nights, enjoy a live pianist.

The Black Olive has comedy Sunday, Aug. 20, at 8 p.m. with three comedians. Tickets are $15 at the door, $12 in advance and $10 for those who would like to have dinner at the Black Olive before the show.

The Black Olive, 1866 Main St. (Route 38), Colonial Plaza (on the corner of Livingston Street), Tewksbury, 978-640-8883. Open Tuesday-Thursday, 11:30 a.m.-2 p.m. and 4- 9 p.m.; Friday 11:30 a.m.- 2 p.m. and 4- 10 p.m.; Saturday, 4-10 p.m.; and Sunday noon-9 p.m. (dinner only).
